LacriScience, LLC under US Patent No. 7,395,103 has developed, soon to be released for clinical testing, a pen-size instrument for accurately measuring tear osmolarity. This fully portable self-contained device with an onboard computer provides an instantaneous in vivo reading on contact with the tear film. No anesthetic is required. It is simple to use. The patient is instructed to look straight ahead. The doctor or technician presses the button to activate the system as the 1 x 3 mm gold-covered sensor is brought near the eye and lightly touches the tear film. The osmolarity is displayed on the handpiece’s LCD in milliosmols. No tear extraction is necessary, no evaporation errors, and without reflex tearing, ensuring accurate reading. This low-cost disposable sensor covered with pure gold is safe for humans and animals. It is used only once per test or per eye.
This device is not FDA approved and is for investigational use only.
